While you’re at it: why do flammable and inflammable mean the same thing?

Dear Anne(ybody who will listen),

Consider this a dramatic way of throwing my frustrated hands up to the blogosphere.  Please, someone, out there, tell me…why, WHY, does my 2-year-old, 2-burner gas stove now refuse to light its flames upward, toward the cooking pots, in favor of lighting downward, toward my table.  My wooden table.  My varnished, wooden table.

While I love the new method of mass-cockroach extinguishing, I’m a touch concerned that I’m going to torch this place to the ground.

The first person with advice wins the prize of probably saving my life.  From starvation or self-combustion, whichever comes first.

I will also accept rational explanations for my stove’s behavior or irrational ones if they make me laugh.  Bonus points if yours is the last laugh I ever have, likely because no one else sent any rational explanations or advice.  If that’s the case, I think it’s only obvious that those surviving me are going to have to hand out bonus points according to the honor system.

Sincerely,

I’m-Scared-To-Make-Toast

    Dad said,

It sounds like the gas feed pipe may be disconnected from the burner element. Or something has crawled into the gas connection and died there. Neither are good! But generally fixable. Commonly there is a pipe going from the bottle through a hose, then metal pipe into the stove. Inside the stove, the metal pipe may have a simple “male” end pressed into a conjoining female end that shoud fit snuggly, but is not necessarily bolted together. It may be as simple as pressing these two pieces back together, which may be possible without taking the stove appart if the gas feed pipe extends straight out the side of the stove.

This needs to be fixed right away. It is dangerous to have the potential for free gas to build up in the stove body, then ignite explosively.

Well? Did SuperDad guess right, or are you still looking for ideas?

PS I agree with SuperDad (and you) – don’t ignore this little issue.
