Package from my G’s

I got the best surprise the other day!  Back in the days of old (are you allowed to have ‘days of old’ when you’re 25?), I had a fabulous 5th grade teacher.  Let’s call her Miss H. who, by now, is Mrs. G.—ooh the mystery created by protecting identities!  Mrs. G. and her 8-year-old daughter sent me the sweetest care packages with goodies for me and gifts for the kids.  Ugandan kids, not MY kids…there haven’t been THAT many ‘days of old’.  I really look forward to sharing some of the arts and crafts with the kiddo-s but, before then, I felt I had to share this cute and, dare I say, extremely accurate, acrostic poem that the daughter wrote on my behalf.

Ahem.  (listen closely)

I think this girl has me pegged.  I mean, I’m elegant TWICE and I like many people (but not all—mature insight).  I also like her style because, instead of going for her thesaurus (they use those in 2nd grade, right?) and pulling out such long-shots as “Yobbish“ and “Yachtswoman“ or stooping to such tactics as “Y-chromosome-less”, “You are really great” or “Y would anyone question your awesomeness?” (still valid points)…she just went straight to the heart of it—Yeah!  Yeah!

I revel in her enthusiasm.

Anyway, this poem really made my week.  As did her second post-script (P.S.S.)- “we bought white gum because of your last name!”.  That sentence could have totally ended in a handful of different ways, but I like that the minds of our unblemished youth are yet to be tormented by issues of race and color.  Unlike me, who had to politely decline the name proposed for our district’s all-Bazungu football team next weekend—“White Power”.

If you’re out there, somewhere, proving my “silliness” true—thanks Mrs. G.!  And Little G., if I can call you that.  That kinda makes us homies.  This was such a good day!

I just came out to your blog to tell you I LOVE reading about your adventures and that packages were coming. That mail service is an amazing thing. I was told you would get the envelopes around Thanksgiving! Yeah (word of the day)! I am so glad you got them and liked everything. I have more here that wouldn’t fit, so be on the look out for more White gum and poems! You really are eligant twice over!
