Unlike previous trips to Kasese, yesterday’s taxi ride did not require passing through the quite literal center of a raging wildfire. Nor did yesterday’s trip encounter swarms of locusts (though it is grasshopper season) or a rampant pestilence (typhoid has been going around….). Basically, all of my expectations to experience the full force of Biblical dread vis-à-vis Ugandan taxis were thwarted by….what? Two really safe taxis!!! Which you should read as—Two really slow taxis!!!
I actually thanked the first driver, who considered himself a “family man with no need to rush”. I didn’t talk to the second driver, but we can consider him as a “man carrying an entire sofa set on top of a mini-van”. Yep, an overstuffed couch and two giant reclining chairs strapped right up there. Hey, I don’t really care what is slowing us down as long as it does, slow us down. Yay for family men and sofa sets!
